Planning Board working group discusses Town Center pedestrian safety and parking

Chilmark Planning Board working group discussed Town Center pedestrian safety and parking constraints during a meeting with local business and emergency service representatives.

Planning Board · Meeting of April 13, 2026

Chilmark Planning Board working group discussed Town Center pedestrian safety and parking constraints during a meeting with local business and emergency service representatives. Members Ann Wallace, Catherine Thompson, and Janet Weidner heard concerns from Fire Chief Manny Rose, Post Office and Martha's Vineyard Bank officials, and school representatives about Post Office parking overflow during school hours, unsafe proximity of children to mail trucks at the parking lot edge, and gaps in crosswalk connectivity. The group noted a discrepancy in emergency evacuation procedures: Fire Chief Rose indicated children would marshal at the Police Department building during an active shooter incident, while school officials understood the EMS building to be the designated point.

Attendees discussed adding a staffed school pick-up and drop-off point to reduce traffic and explored establishing a four-way stop at Town Center.
